Get Out and Explore Our History (Active Since July 1, 2021)

Challenge:  This is a clue-based and mobile device activity, where you will use the provided cryptic clues on this Game Card to find various historical locations that played a significant role in Princeton’s history. As a last resort, we have included each locations longitude/latitude coordinates to help you zero in on each location.

Instructions: Once you arrive at a location, you need to search to find a 9×6 sign on a stake or tree, on which there will be printed: Princeton Historical Society, a QR code, and the PHS website URL. Use your mobile device’s camera to view the QR code. When the words “Open Flowcode.com” appears tap those words. This should load/display a PDF which describes and displays circa 1900 images of the location you have found. Read/scroll to the bottom of this PDF and record the red keyword you find in to the empty space on your Game Card. We suggest you save/email this document to yourself to possibly print/read thoroughly at a later time.

PURPOSE: This historical activity has been created to mark and celebrate Princeton’s 250th year anniversary of its’ 1771 incorporation. (Click here to learn the difference between the 1759 and 1771 dates). This is a no rush activity; it can be done in a weekend or slowly as you find the time. We are sure you’ll find it more interesting and engaging to try to find and investigate each location as a family, competition, or some other small group (friends, troop, team, etc.), but it is perfectly OK to attempt it as an individual, too.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

  1. Tell someone what you will be doing and bring a cell phone.
  2. Bring a bottle of water; please dispose of any trash you have, properly.
  3. Wear outdoor hiking appropriate clothing and shoes.
  4. Each set of clues for a new location is labeled with its degree of difficulty, and a couple are marked requiring a climb or substantial walk.
  5. Having a writing utensil, a compass, as well as a camera to document your adventure might prove very helpful during this hunt.
  6. Your likely method for travel between locations will be via an automobile, please make sure you park safely off the road and not block some one’s driveway.
  7. Feel free to post your adventure on social media, but do not give away any locations.
